“appreciation with digressions”

As the result of poet/collaborator and long time supporter/friend Michael Mann forwarding the August 2025 Studio Toile d’Angles concert schedule to his neighbor, Jay Wilkinson, they both attended the August 30, 2025 duo concert featuring me (on piano) and Anthony Cox (cello). A self-described “volunteer, care provider, cyclist, retired human rights lawyer whose shocking (to him) itch for poetry and other creative writing arrived suddenly at age 48”, the music that evening occasioned an unanticipated lovely, personal overview.

And should one check out the interview with Anthony linked at the end of the piece, I should note the actual circumstances of my meeting him. At the time, 1973 or thereabouts, I was, along with adopting a new name for the ensemble, reconfiguring the personnel. I approached Mark Maistrovich, guitarist in the Infinity Art Unit whose work I deeply respected with the thought of working as a duo. He suggested adding Anthony, a good friend of his, who, at the time, was also playing guitar. A session at Anthony’s was arranged, and I was impressed with him as a person as well as a musician. Prior to our first public appearance, Anthony switched to acoustic bass, and, the rest is, well, you know…
